Malou Hale & Mikaela Gillman

of Canto House are currently collaborating to write and

illustrate an adult picture book

about love and heartbreak.

 

Written in the tradition of

magical realism, the story

treats heartbreak as something expansive, surreal and worthy

of attention. The work combines photographic fragments with

digital illustration to reflect

the nonlinear nature of longing

and grief. By giving heartbreak narrative weight and visual presence, the book insists that depth of

feeling is not embarrassing,

but human. ​
